Dermatologist Answers Medi Lift Essential Mask FAQs

Celebrity dermatologist Ava Shamban, MD situates Medi Lift Essential Mask’s Electronic Muscle Stimulation (EMS) in the DIY skin rejuvenation device pantheon.

DIY skin devices are everywhere. How do they fit with one another and why are there so many of them? Skincare guru Dr. Ava Shamban gives us the lowdown.

Q: What should people understand about the treatment of aging skin?

A: Dr. Shamban, “All aging–and the skin is the most visible part of this–is not a single event. Rather, it is a series of events that unfold over time, creating a cascade if you will. Different tissues age at different rates. This is why, just like in the body, adequate treatment requires a collection of behaviors (effective products, sunscreen use, proper nutrition, stress management, sleeping on your back) rather than just a single response.”

Q: What should people know before they invest in at-home skin rejuvenation devices?

Dr. Shamban: “All of these technologies are moderated versions of what we have in our practice. As such, they’re safe to use and if you stick with them, you’ll definitely see improvement. But you’re not going to get the dramatic rejuvenation results you will as with a professional medical treatment.”

Q: What are the most popular technologies for at-home rejuvenation devices, what do they do and what are their visible results?

Dr. Shamban: “Each of the technologies targets a different kind of tissue. It’s the combination of changes in the various tissues that come with aging that visibly compromises the skin. It’s never just one thing. Also, some devices combine technologies which can be a time saver. Plus, some of the technologies’ benefits may overlap.”

The most common:

  • Radio frequency – stimulates collagen synthesis to tighten skin
  • IPL Intense Pulsed Light – treats discoloration, brown spots and redness on the top layer
  • Microneedling – infuses rejuvenating serum under the surface to smooth out fine lines

Q: How is Medi Lift Essential Mask different from the others?

Dr. Shamban: “Medi Lift Essential Mask is an EMS (electrical muscle stimulation) device. Unlike the others that work on the skin’s surface or just below it, Essential Mask actually tones the muscles underneath that support the skin and other tissues.

Q: Even though it’s the underlying facial muscles in the lower face that are stimulated, how will this be reflected on my skin?

Dr. Shamban: “Medi Lift Essential Mask helps tighten muscle tone, lifts the cheeks and contours the jawline. This in turn, visibly adds plumpness to the skin.”

Q: Is it safe to use Essential Mask if I also use other kinds of devices?

A: “Absolutely yes! (though not simultaneously, give your face a chance to rest for a day between them.) You can alternate device days safely and get excellent results. In our office, we often treat multiple kinds of tissues.”

Q: Is it safe to use the Essential Mask in the bathtub?

Dr. Shamban: “That would be an emphatic NO!”
